My build is an R9 390 M.S.I. with 8GB RAM, an i5-4690K processor, and an 8GB DDR3 M. Z97s Krait edition. I mainly play Wow, which runs smoothly at about 60 FPS in most environments except crowded areas like big cities where 1080p is common. Occasionally I experience fps drops. I've become very interested in optimizing my PC and peripherals, so I'm considering CPU overclocking because it's a demanding game. If I do that, I'd recommend a cooler like the Master 212 Evo. I'm wondering if I could still achieve solid FPS at 1440p with these changes. I might also need a new monitor for that resolution. What do you think? Feel free to share any insights or experiences.

Boosting resolution depends on your GPU and typically improves FPS rather than CPU. Overclocking might help since it seems like game physics are affecting performance. Also, look into whether the Cryorig H7 is available at a discount—it outperforms the 212 Evo in most areas except price, unless it's currently on sale.

Additionally, you might be experiencing FPS drops due to cross-realm effects and activity in major urban areas. Despite having a 6700k and a 1070, these features continue to impact your performance.

I wasn't aware of that, thank you! Maybe I should check the OC settings for my R9 as well when temperatures are near 68°C in-game. If I cap FPS around 65 and turn on v-sync, it gets extremely hot—close to 90°C—and also quite noisy. I don’t know why.

What frame rate you're seeing and whether you're running at 1080p with 60Hz is the question.

When the GPU exceeds its limits in temperature, it tends to become quite loud because the cooling fan runs at full speed to prevent overheating. If VSync is disabled, you might notice some whine from the fans rather than fan noise. This isn't a major concern beyond being bothersome, but I’ll provide an example to help compare the sounds. Also, the device heats up significantly when it’s running at maximum capacity all the time while VSync is off—just focus on the hum you’re hearing instead of the fan.

The 90C reading seems off. Is your case's airflow functioning properly? Have you experimented with adjusting fan curves to avoid overheating? GPUs handle up to 85°C, but 90°C is a concern. Regarding CPU overclocking, why not just attempt it? You can easily raise it to 4.7GHz, which is typically the standard range for that CPU.

It's a bit surreal, isn't it? But the temps climb to 85-90 degrees when I skip FPS limits and turn on v sync in WoW only. I've adjusted fan curves without success. Reaaan why not just upgrade hardware instead of risking more trouble?

Oh, I see. You thought I'd already covered that. For your purchase, try Cryorig H7 and stay quiet! Pure Rock also works, though it can be pricier sometimes. It tends to show better results compared to Evo.
