Addressing overheating on your AMD Ryzen 7 5800X
Hello everyone, I was assembling a budget gaming rig for my son and gathered some solid components. I acquired an affordable case, a CPU cooler, and other parts. The CPU operates at idle around 80°C, but spikes to 92°C during gameplay—this is significantly too high. I suspected the thermal paste might be the issue, so I reapplied it and checked again; the temperature stayed the same. Then I switched to a smaller form factor AIO cooler (Amazon link) and installed it. The idle temperature dropped from 80°C to 90°C, which makes no sense. So I’m going back to the smaller case for now until I resolve this. I’m using Artic MX-4 thermal paste as well. Am I dealing with a faulty CPU? Also, the case I bought from Best Buy is only returning within 15 days—what’s going on?
It seems the front panel is sturdy, limiting airflow and preventing the CPU from receiving adequate cool air. Consider removing it if feasible and rechecking.
It appears the design focuses on a bottom or side intake style, making it unnecessary to open the front if it can be accessed. That works for most O11 models (though they often have more exhausts). I assume there are sufficient fans in the system—perhaps the issue isn’t with the CPU itself but with expectations and thermal management. The air cooler seems poorly matched, and 5800X’s with eight cores on a single chip can be challenging if not properly stocked. Do you have enough fans set up for bottom intake and rear exhaust? Also, where is the radiator for the AIO located?
I also use an AMD Ryzen 7 5800X in my daily PC. Initially I relied on a 120mm AIO from my previous setup, but it couldn't keep up with the new CPU. Now I’m using an ARTIC Freezer 240 AIO, which I believe matches the performance level of the AIO you have. At 900 RPM pump speed I achieve around 54°C. The case doesn’t seem ideal for installing the coolers. It’s crucial that the top of the AIO is higher than the highest point of your CPU cooler or pump part. When inspecting the case, I couldn’t find a suitable spot to mount the AIO. Could you share photos of your current fan setup and a picture showing how the AIO is mounted? Also, please confirm if air can flow freely to the AIO from both the front and backside of the radiator unit.
I located the installation guide for your liquid cooler. It appears to be correct. Verify the airflow direction of the fans—should fresh air enter via the side panel through the radiator into the case, while the rear fan expels air out. Are there any fans installed on the bottom of the case? Have you reviewed the fan curves within the BIOS settings? Which MOBO are you using?
It's a bottom and side intake unit, similar to Lian-Li 011 or Hyte Y60.
Similar to what others above have inquired, provide additional information about fan positioning. (For example: quantity of fans for intake, locations of placement, exhaust fans and their positions). Also, confirm whether you removed the protective label from the AIO’s cold plate.
