Adding More Memory
Adding More Memory
My laptop: HP Omen 15-c0xx Motherboard: HP 8390 Processor : Intel Core i5-7300HQ CPU running at 2.50GHz Right now I have 8GB of RAM from Samsung that runs on DDR4 at speeds around 2400MHz So, what do I need to know? Are there different types of RAM sticks for my laptop? Or can I just plug in a new stick with more speed like 3600MHz or 4800MHz and have the system slow down instead? I really want to keep using the exact same type of RAM as if it was still available but since it's discontinued, I couldn't find one used anywhere nearby. Any advice would be super helpful!
The best thing is to buy an upgrade kit that uses two 8GB sticks of DDR4 RAM at 2400MHz and works with voltages around 1.25 or 1.35 volts. You should probably check if the laptop has a new BIOS update before installing these extra modules. Where do you live, what website is best for buying this stuff and how much money are you willing to spend on the RAM?
Thanks for the quick reply! To answer your questions, I live in Serbia right now. I'd be okay buying two new sticks of ram from any store (the biggest ones here are https://gigatron.rs and https://www.tehnomanija.rs). The funny thing is that I can't seem to find a single 2400mhz stick anywhere in the country (I can get anything from 1600 to 7200, just not 2400 lol...). Is the 2400 ddr4 a rare type or something? Would it be okay to just put in a stick of 2666mhz and 1.2V, with similar latency?
You don't need a fancy new stick because your computer already handles 2400MHz well. If you try to put faster stuff in, the system will automatically slow it down to what your CPU can handle. I've swapped RAM sticks in laptops way too many times and never had any problems personally. When looking at what to buy for this, here is a link: https://gigatron.rs/memorije/kingston-va...s88-160036 I can't find specific kits right now, so I just suggest buying one stick of 8GB RAM and pairing it with your existing ones. If you ever run into issues later on, just grab another stick to add in.
Thanks for getting my reply. I wasn't sure if just lowering the clock speed would be a good fix. I'll try it with the pinned memory and let you know what happens! Just one more thing, the ram in question has cl19 latency while mine is cl 17. Is that something I should worry about or not?
It doesn't matter anymore, you can't easily buy RAM that speeds like 2133MHz or even 2400MHz these days. Your memory will just run at whatever speed your computer processor allows. I have some RAM in my laptop running at 2666MHz, but it only hits its limit because the CPU is slower and won't go higher.
