Adding a RAM stick increases system memory capacity.
I once disassembled an old PC from under the bed to check for usable parts. Mostly dust was there, but I found four RAM sticks, each with one gigabyte. Now I have 16 gigabytes and still have two slots available. I wondered if adding another two gigabytes would help, even temporarily. Would the computer automatically detect and use the extra RAM? Also, could adding the wrong type of RAM cause problems? I’ve heard people mention RAM sizes in fours and think 18 is unusual—does that sound like me? Sorry for being simple, I’m just starting out. Thanks in advance!
I retrieved it from an old workstation my mother used in her office back then. I brought it home in 2017 to transfer PES option files onto a USB drive for my PS4. I even managed to run Flight Simulator 2004 on it, though it lacked many features. I decided to take a closer look and check what parts might still be useful. From the hardware, it had four RAM modules, a hard drive, a CD/DVD drive, and two small fans—all still functional. However, none of these components are ideal for a current gaming setup; they seem outdated.
