I possess a PCIe 4.0 4x M.2 SSD. My motherboard has PCIe 3.0 16 slots (for GTX 1070) and PCIe 2.0 16 slots (unused). In theory, PCIe 2.0 16x bandwidth equals PCIe 4.0 4x bandwidth, which is 64Gbps. If I could locate a PCIe 4.0 4x adapter, I could use my SSD at full speed without replacing the board. Does such a product exist? If it does, please direct me to a recommendation. From my studies I've found this: I considered the ASUS Hyper M.2 X16 PCIe 4.0 X4 card and placing one SSD inside, but after thinking it through I believe it won't work. Even though the card supports a 16x slot, each PCIe 4.0 4x lane only connects to four lanes on the card, not all sixteen. It seems downconverters like this don't seem to be available.
It doesn't seem to function that way. The physical wires for 16x connect the PCIE slot to the motherboard. You'd need an active converter, which I'm not aware of. Linking a PCIE4.0 4x device to PCIE2.0 would only result in a PCIE2.0 4x setup.
