You can still use your brother’s extra Windows 8.1 keys to activate Windows 10 Pro, as long as you have the proper activation method.

Microsoft isn't offering free upgrades for Windows 10 anymore... You might need a new license.

It's completely without cost... why not give it a shot?

Used Windows 7 activation keys for extended Windows 10 support. Ensure you install the appropriate Windows 10 edition matching your Windows 8 version.

You can also set up Windows 10 without going through the activation process. This means you'll miss out on some extra customization options, but the core functionality should still operate. Today, Microsoft seems to focus more on availability than activation requirements.

Consider trying it directly. Microsoft prefers capturing larger market shares rather than relying solely on actual revenue. Since they already depend on other income streams, they’d likely secure activation more effectively.

I just tested it (last month) with a Windows 7 home premium key to unlock a Windows 10 home license. It works fine and no watermark appears.

The Windows 7, 8 and 8.1 license keys remain valid for installing Windows 10 versions, including those hard-coded into motherboard BIOS that automatically select the right install without prompts.
