I received a brand new laptop (Lenovo v17 g3 iap) from someone on a local used electronics site. They said it was in Greek and only had Windows installed. It seems like it might have been an exhibition item since they gave me just the machine and its charger. The Windows version shows it isn't activated. After trying two software tools that provide activation keys, I found two but they still don’t work. What should I do?

I have a few ideas, but none seem promising. It could be the laptop is fake. Or someone might have altered the BIOS and changed something important. It’s possible it was flagged or blocked somehow. Have you considered erasing it completely and reinstalling Windows 11? You might also want to reach out to Lenovo directly for guidance.

I initially considered starting with a clean installation of Windows 11 instead of resetting it. I think you probably won’t receive a refund for that device, so buying an OEM key might be your only option... you really have no other choice if you can’t return the laptop.

Yes, it's a fresh installation using a USB drive as the media creation tool (such as Windows 10; you haven't tried Windows 11 yet).

Counterfeit refers to fake or imitation items. If you don’t activate them, they won’t function as intended and may not work properly.

It appears designed to mimic Lenovo but is a fake copy. The definition of counterfeit applies here, and without activation you won’t get access to personalization features or customization options. Microsoft no longer fully restricts the OS when it isn’t activated.

1) If you choose to turn it on, will you be fine with the two-dollar options?
2) Once activated, should I perform a clean install or simply add the key into my current setup?
3) As a college student, may I use it for educational licenses? If yes, are there any restrictions?

You can use your spare valid license without issues, and it will remain active even after leaving the college. I've also never faced difficulties obtaining affordable keys from eBay. For the reinstallation, I suggest doing it because you're unsure what might be inside the box—it could contain hidden items.
