Hi everyone. This situation is odd. Usually, when I power on my PC, the network drops after about 5 to 10 minutes—not just for my machine but for the whole house. I’m using an Ethernet connection, and once the modem restarts, everything works again. Even more puzzling, if I turn off my PC before the connection fails (like only using it for a few minutes), the issue still appears after some time and requires a restart. At first, I thought it might be malware, but after checking with Malwarebytes forum admins, nothing was found on my system. Still, I’m worried. My setup is: Ryzen 5 3500 GT, 8GB RAM, using a recycled Technicolor 7200 modem with a dynamic IP from Windows 11. It’s not static, according to the provider’s invoices. What could possibly cause such widespread disruption?

Did you test a different Ethernet cable or another router/modem port?

you have two options for your IP address: one that stays fixed and another that changes. Your external IP is the one you talked about, while the IP between your PC and the router remains unknown to your ISP. open the start menu, go to network and sharing center, then select change adapter settings. right-click the ethernet connection and click properties. choose internet protocol version 4 and make sure it’s set to both automatic. it’s recommended to restart your computer afterward.

I’ll give it another shot. However, it seems it’s already set to automatic, and that shouldn’t stop it from working even when the computer is turned off. Also, I’ve tested all seven LAN ports on my modem and used a different cable.

Check if your connected device is a modem/router combo. If you're navigating Modem > Switch > AP/PC, it might be the right path. The issue could stem from the modem only getting one IP address, which might cause these problems. I recall similar situations where internet traffic was sent to each PC through the switch. Another possibility is that your PC's Ethernet port isn't functioning properly—perhaps due to incorrect IO shielding or a fault in the port itself.

When researching the term, it appears you're dealing with a modem-router-switch AP device. It seems like a potential broadcast storm could occur if a PC connects through a crossover cable or a faulty cable segment. Another possibility is that your PC functions as a DHCP server, which might happen when Internet Connection Sharing is turned on. You can verify this by following the advice from @IBM_THINKPAD_R51 and checking the sharing settings to ensure "Allow other network users to connect through this computer’s Internet connection" is not disabled.

Thank you for bringing it to my attention. I should have noticed it earlier.

Sure, just to confirm, the system is already in automatic mode and there’s no sharing involved. It looks like the cable isn’t a crossover since it’s connected straight to the modem.
