I’m preparing to set up a PC soon and wanted to know the best method for installing Windows. I understand you can purchase a USB drive with a copy, though they tend to be expensive. There’s also talk about downloading Windows onto a blank USB drive for free, but it won’t be activated. Does the system function properly without activation, and if yes, how do you get it activated?

The fee applies to the activation key, not the USB itself.

You can obtain Microsoft install media at no cost and test it as well. The main variation is a watermark in the lower right corner prompting activation. Once activated, you can purchase a license online—possibly through the Windows Store—and follow these steps: Start menu → cogwheel → Update and security → Activation, where a button or link appears to complete the process. If you’re logged into a Microsoft account, you can also transfer the existing license to another PC without charge (though the previous one will be deactivated). There’s also a command you can execute, though I’m not entirely sure of its details.

Activation isn't included in the installers. You can obtain the image for free and simply burn it onto a USB drive. Just need a valid registration key. Wherever you download the installers, it doesn't matter—website, torrent, DVD, it's the same. Windows 10 can be used without activation, making it essentially free unless you're okay with the watermark.
