Tomorrow I’ll get my specs for the NP8268-S, but right now the computer already has a disk drive with all utilities and drivers. I just need an OS, any good recommendations for affordable options?

For students, Microsoft offers Windows 8.1 at a discounted rate. Educators should also be able to access it. If you don't qualify, consider buying full price or joining the r/microsoftsoftwareswap community on Reddit for potential deals.

Hardforum typically offers certain keys for sale, similar to what's available on softwareswap. These are generally functional keys but are not intended for sale.

I think there's a site called go2keys that a few of my friends have gotten 'legitimate' Windows 8.1 product keys from. It's a bit shady but saves you tons of money.

I agree with this. /r/microsoftsoftwareswap is great for affordable licenses. You can also find OEM options at sites like Newegg, though they cost more than buying directly from a store.

On Linux you can enjoy similar features at a lower cost as a student, and later upgrade to Windows 10 without paying extra (as claimed).

You can find a budget option for 38 dollars on G2A, or if you're willing to invest time, consider Linux.

You can upgrade to a cheaper version for an older Windows 8.1 by purchasing a new one around $199. The link provided leads to the Microsoft Store page for it.
