Hello everyone: Someone seems to have an issue with my machine, but I'm not sure what. Check the end of this post for details. About two months ago, my computer started freezing. The CPU would hit maximum usage, and all programs stopped working. The mouse stayed on but didn't respond to clicks. I think there are two possible causes: my CPU or my SSD. My CPU is an I5 2500K, and I checked the temperatures. When it freezes, the temps stay normal, never going above 40°C. My SSD is a 2-year-old ADATA SPX 900 with 512GB, but I'm not sure how to test if that's the problem. I first had this issue on Windows 7, so I assumed it was malware from years ago. I did a clean install, but now it's a fresh Windows 10 copy—no malware detected. Thanks for the advice! Full specs attached.

Am I part of the Windows 10 anniversary update discussion? Possibly it’s tied to a recent Windows patch. Other ideas include an erratic overclock, failing RAM, or storage problems. It seems to occur without a clear trigger and often causes full CPU load. My 2500K usually freezes or loops instead.

I'm reviewing the anniversary update. It seems I faced this issue well before my OC, so it probably isn't related. I'm checking my SSD for any problems. Usually, the locking occurs unexpectedly during multitasking or when Windows launches. Updated: Windows detected an error on my SSD. Am I at risk of losing all data?

Occasionally a single error or a few issues during chkdsk might occur. However, if this keeps happening, it could mean the SSD is failing. Alternatively, you might want to test with a fresh SATA data cable. My cousin experienced problems with a damaged SATA cable—when we forced the side panel open, his PC would crash unpredictably.

Occasionally after an SSD fails, you might still be able to read data but not write to it. Check if you can perform writes; this helps determine the drive's condition. As Scotty mentioned, consistently seeing chkdsk errors indicates a deteriorating storage device.
