have an old acer pc ready for an upgrade to handle some games smoothly
current setup details:
16gb ram (added another 8 recently)
i3-7100 processor
no graphics card
updated the power supply to a 750w unit that no longer works
my concerns:
- what cpu and gpu options fit this motherboard without changing it?
- i plan to replace parts one by one.
- i’m considering swapping the cpu first (i5-9500, 6 cores) then the gpu (gt 750ti 4gb), or vice versa.
- if both upgrades are done, what motherboard should work with the i5-9500 and gt 750ti?
- storage-wise, i think there’s a m.2 slot available.
i’m thinking about using it for games like dota 2, valorant, documents, word, and some photoshopping.

The CPU I’m considering swapping is an i5-9500, which has six cores—six more than the i3.
This upgrade won’t work with your existing motherboard.

I’ve upgraded my PSU to a local 750W model (replaced the old one because it wasn’t working). We’ll need to know the PSU’s make and model.
I’m not in favor of upgrading a prebuilt unit, as it only reduces your return on investment. You haven’t shared your location, preferred purchasing site, or budget for these upgrades. Also, regarding the motherboard, are you using an Acer prebuilt or a salvaged one from such a prebuilt?
If it’s the prebuilt version:
the chassis limits you to half-height cards, which greatly limits your choices (or you have options, but they’re extremely expensive). The airflow in that case is poor, so you risk wasting your investment.
already moved the components to the mid tower case
the psu is a 750 local brand model, which is affordable
with this upgrade, the psu will be included, either Corsair or MSI
this pc is just a gift for me, I own a more powerful laptop
this will serve as my backup
on the motherboard, I thought it could fit the CPU with the same LGA 1151 socket
this system is nearly ten years old, so i plan to upgrade gradually
