About OS recomendation..

I possess my father's old Compaq Presario CQ42 laptop equipped with a Pentium T4500, 5GB RAM, and a Crucial BX500 240GB SSD. I aim to enter the pentesting sector, so I need to install Ubuntu 18.04 LTS alongside Windows 10 in dual-boot mode. Can I do this? If using two operating systems, the default one runs smoothly while the other feels sluggish... Will this scenario occur? What should I set as the default OS and which bootloader should I use—GRUB or Windows?

The system doesn't recognize whether it's the default or not, and this doesn't affect its performance.

The updated system should function well on that older 10-year-old machine once you upgrade to 5GB DDR3 RAM and an SSD.

I’d start with Windows, then move to Linux. The system should recognize the Windows setup and configure Grub for a dual-boot configuration.

I’ll create a copy of your Windows 10 setup from the HDD to an SSD. After that, Ubuntu 18.04 LTS should function just fine on this upgraded machine with 5GB DDR3 RAM and an SSD.

It should work without issues, though it's just under the basic needs. Consider using lighter desktop settings, which could improve performance if Ubuntu feels sluggish.
