Hey everyone! Here’s the rundown of my setup:
I’m using a MoBo build with an Asus ROG Maximus Hero VIII. The CPU is an i7 6700K. RAM comes in two sets of Corsair Vengeance LPX CMK16GX4M2A2133C13, each with 8GB, totaling 32GB. The GPU is a Gigabyte AORUS Xtreme 1080 Ti, and the cooler is the Corsair H110i Extreme. The PSU is a Corsair HX850i platinum.
I had to replace one RAM stick because it broke long ago. For years—about three—my PC ran smoothly with three 8GB sticks (24GB total). I placed them in DIMM A2 + B2 and A1, and it worked perfectly for a while.
Recently, I cleaned the PC, reapplied thermal paste, and restarted. After about 10-15 minutes, I got a Blue Screen of Death again. I restarted and it happened multiple times until I checked my RAMs.
I ran Memtest86 with at least eight passes. The first pass showed over 800 CPU errors. I suspected something was wrong with the CPU placement or fastening. After reassembling everything carefully, I put only one RAM in slot B1. It started up fine. Then I tried moving it to other slots—B1 and B2 worked great, while A1 and A2 didn’t boot at all, staying black.
When I put a RAM in A1 DIMM, I saw debug codes appear. After some cycles, the codes changed from 01 to 03, then back to 01/03. Eventually, both sets of debug codes started.
I experimented with different combinations: B1+A1/A2 and B2+A1/A2. All three RAMs worked together in certain slots. But when I tried mixing two in one slot (B1 + A1 or B2 + A1/A2), it wouldn’t boot again.
So, I decided to remove the CPU entirely and inspect it for bent pins. After cleaning thoroughly, reinstalling the cooler, and securing everything carefully, I finally got it working. Now I’m running Memtest86 with 8 passes and everything is stable.
24GB of RAM is still a challenge, but I’m hopeful this will help. Any tips or advice would be greatly appreciated!
It seems like there might be an issue with the CPU socket, possibly due to a damaged connection or a bent pin. Alternatively, the motherboard or CPU itself could be faulty, though that's less probable.
I owned a machine with this board still present. It would function properly without any problems. However, if it was bumped while moving or if I accidentally knocked out or removed the RAM, it would become severely damaged. Fixing it could take anywhere from minutes to hours. Sometimes just gently touching the RAM resolved the issue, other times repeated insertion or removal was necessary, even swapping identical sticks in the slots. Over time, the heat from operating at 2.66 GHz up to nearly 4 GHz likely wore down the RAM connectors, causing it to run hot eventually.

You can try other solutions to resolve the issue. Regarding the PSU cable, it could indeed be a factor if one of its pins fails. Your concern about a specific pin in the cable powering A1 and A2 is valid—checking for damage there might explain the problem.
The problem remains consistent even though the motherboard, RAM, and CPU are brand new. It still won’t start with any RAM stick in either slot A1 or A2. I could consider installing a new CPU fan later to check if that improves things.
It didn't assist with the new CPU. Have you checked for any fixes?
