Recently I've been spending more time with my nephew. I pick him up from school because his dad works late, assist with his assignments, and then we play some games together before he heads home. At his house the previous time he introduced me to his Xbox games; most of them offered little or no advancement. He isn't particularly skilled at gaming, and often assumes they're simple or misunderstands the rules. He enjoys arcade-style titles mainly because I notice they usually have unlocked content—like racing games where tracks are filled with a variety of vehicles. I chose to teach him how to play, opting for more challenging titles. The game we finished was Tomb Raider 2013. It featured solid mechanics, such as painted ledges indicating climbing paths, and boss fights were straightforward to overcome. I never completed the final level myself, but I paused the game to clarify his confusion—questions like “Why are you dying here?” or “What weapon should you use?” led him to think about barrels and environment. He eventually learned to adapt tactics, switching weapons and strategies when certain ones failed. Although it seemed dull, he had fun while I helped him grasp how games interact with players. For our next session I considered Fallout 3 but needed some suggestions for a solid follow-up. Control support is essential, and I plan to set up a PC for him once he grows older; his current hand size makes using standard keys difficult, so I’ll use an Xbox One controller I acquired.

Kerbal Space Program, grasp the basics of rocket science. Rocket League. Octodad Dadliest Catch Sonic. Any classic game you loved as a kid, like a wild taxi ride.

I understand you might face criticism, but I strongly suggest trying Final Fantasy! It's an engaging thinking game with full controller compatibility and works on most computers. The visuals are impressive, and the gameplay mechanics are solid. It includes a compelling storyline that offers valuable life lessons, making it a great choice for children.

I demonstrated Doom 3 to him and he was nervous (attempted to show bravery)... I believe he wouldn’t sleep again after that experience.

Currently I'm enjoying FFXIII, though a Final Fantasy title would be a great choice too!

Make sure he sends the child terrifying dreams, just like in Kerbal Space Program, OP—perhaps some strategy titles such as Civ 5 too.

Fallout might be a little too graphic, but Halo if it's an xbox definately for movement and aiming skills... There's an awesome game called Skyrim out there (Sarasm meter high) that isn't too graphic (I believe there's settings if you're worried about that)... Every gamer I know has played the ElderScrolls at least for 3 hours, so y'know what I mean. Assassins Creed I found is a not too violent (heheh but seriously, I got more scared of Halo thaan AC) but it's pretty easy to understand with pretty good tutorials and forgiving respawns (so you don't rage alot)... OR just buy him a gamecube and buy all the old-school Zelda games. That's how my grandparents got me into gaming (yus, my parents weren't fond of it...) Also, if you're going to build him a PC, you should start talking about whaat type of gear he'll want (i.e. Mechanical switches, Razer, Corsair, Logitech, Razer, etc)... Just a good converstion starter. Who knows?! He might not even like PC games. I have a few friends that use controllers for everything. NOTE: If there's any spelling errors, don't hate plz... My keyboaard is giving me issues (TIP: Don't spill waater on a mecchaantical keyboard...) -LukeS I_M_3rd
