As long as Windows can be reinstalled, the Storage Spaces array should work fine. The configuration data is stored directly on the array, not on Windows. Have you verified that the M.2 drive is properly configured as a GPT and set in BIOS to the right access mode? It seems odd that BIOS settings might have changed, but it’s worth confirming. You can open Diskpart using the Windows install media (probably by pressing SHIFT and F10 to launch Command Prompt) and check or modify disk types, as well as remove any partitions that might be causing Windows installation problems. So I’m not sure which step resolved the issue, but here’s what I did to get the computer back online and install Windows:
1. I took the M.2 SSD out of the original machine and put it on another one. I formatted the new drive and moved a file over to test if it worked.
2. Once I confirmed the drive was functional, I reinstalled it. Then I installed Ubuntu as the operating system to check if the SATA controller on the motherboard was working. I did this without any problems.
3. I updated my BIOS with the latest version just in case.
4. I re-downloaded the Media Creation Tool, formatted the USB drive using Quick Format (unchecked), created a bootable flash drive with Windows 10, and selected the UEFI option. Windows installed successfully.
Hope this helps others. It was definitely a tough process, but I finally have a working computer. Thanks to Backblaze for backing up my data—it would’ve been lost if I hadn’t done that.
