I have an i9 9900KF. I wanted to get a 10900K, but I’ve been advised here that that would be a bad upgrade. Would I be better served to wait for Rocket Lake or Zen 3?

The Ryzen 4th gen is nearly here, so if you really need to upgrade, you might want to hold off. Edited September 18, 2020 by BlueChinchillaEatingDorito Brain fart

Regarding gaming: Yes, or even more. Your system runs at 8/16 @ 5ghz. You might spot some minor tweaks, but improvements are likely in single digits on something already quick. Even harder to find 10900ks means reviewers can’t access them. You’re probably solid on the CPU front until DDR5 releases arrive. Edited September 18, 2020 by Bombastinator

Rocket Lake on 14nm remains stable. Intel hasn't shared any methods to boost gaming performance beyond that. More cores won't help much. Zen 3 could be the answer, but we'll have to monitor its progress.

Honestly, you don't really have much to upgrade for. You already have one of the best CPUs, even if there are some that are slightly better. If you have a hole burning in your pocket, or you found a good way to flip the i9, you may be able to get a maybe noticeable performance bump. That's just how CPUs are - you don't need to upgrade every generation.

Upgrade only when necessary; continue using the 9900kf. If you require additional power, wait for Zen 3 and review its capabilities.
