A recent PC setup changed unexpectedly following a 'click' noise.
Hi, I put together my new PC. It starts up in an unpredictable way—not always under heavy use or high heat. Sometimes it shuts down after a few minutes, other times after an hour, with no clear reason. I only notice a clicking sound, then everything powers off and the motherboard lights stay on. The shutdown happens without any error screen. This issue appears in both Windows and BIOS. I've tried: updating drivers, updating Windows, clearing the GPU, removing the HDD, disconnecting cables, reinstalling the cooler, resetting the CPU, reconnecting all cables, using different cables from the same power supply, checking RAM status, verifying temperatures, plugging into another outlet, and switching to a different keyboard and mouse. Despite these steps, the problem persists. Last time I faced it, I saw a black screen, CPU error light activated, and the motherboard was affected. After rebooting everything worked fine. I suspect the problem might be with the motherboard, CPU, or power supply unit. I need to return the faulty component for replacement. The main challenge is identifying the exact part causing this issue. No one else seems to have encountered this, any suggestions or experiences would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
The “click” sound might indicate the OCP relay in the PSU. Consider increasing your PSU capacity by 100 watts.
I understand. Short bursts might be the issue. Using power from multiple phases could help. Here are the details about the PSU specs: https://www.enermax.com/en/products/revo...-d.f.-850w
I don’t have the newest bios, I was really excited to install it because the computer just shut off unexpectedly, which could cause issues during updates. I’ll check XMP later, I don’t know what it does. Currently the RAM isn’t running at full speed and I haven’t adjusted the BIOS settings yet.
I've experimented with various setups and it works even without the GPU. I'll try again later; I'm not an expert, but could a component need replacing?
It could stem from a motherboard issue, possibly a faulty component. The BIOS might also be experiencing problems. During a BIOS flash, the same concerns would apply for returning it under warranty. Is the power supply unit brand new? Are your motherboard mounts correctly placed? Does it occur when assembling the system without a case? What temperature readings does your BIOS display? How does it behave in Windows?
