Your friend has an older Toshiba laptop with a mix of hardware and software issues. The system runs Windows Vista but seems to be stuck between versions, repeatedly shutting down and restarting. After partitioning and reformatting the hard drive, Windows 10 worked perfectly. Now, when launching Windows 10 it still crashes and restarts repeatedly. The memory test passed and disk checks found no problems, but the instability persists. A new 320GB SATA hard drive with 4GB RAM is available online, which could be a good replacement. Consider swapping it in if needed. You might also try updating the BIOS or checking for driver conflicts.

I’ve heard that this old laptop is still used for warehouse registration. If it hasn’t been properly cared for, it’s likely overheating or the hard drive is failing. We have an old Corsaie SSD, but any SATA option works. You can open it up, refresh the thermal paste on all cooling components, and clear out the dust buildup. It runs Windows 10 just fine. Just don’t waste money on it—those things are basically worthless. But if you’re curious, it might just have a failing drive or be overheating.

When the fan appears to function, consider swapping out the thermal paste. If this doesn't resolve the issue, it's best to stop further effort.

Winning on 4GB will feel like walking through thick molasses in winter. It will start to work but won’t be enjoyable. Try installing a Linux distribution such as Ubuntu—it can boot up smoothly if the issues are fixed. Replace the slow 5400rpm spinning HDD with an SSD for a noticeable improvement.

You can try checking online marketplaces or software retailers for a Vista 64 bit copy.

Initially I assumed this would work, but it keeps running the whole time while installing Win 64 from the stick. It only crashes when it attempts to run normally.

Using the new SSD works, but every time it launches I see an error saying Windows failed to load correctly and asks to reinstall. The troubleshooter isn’t able to identify the issue. I’ve tried it before and it happens again. Any suggestions on what to do next? Thank you.

It seems you might need to set up the latest launch version of 10 or upgrade from 7 to 10 to access certain drivers.
