Hello, I received a PC with a history of frequent crashes from a friend. The specifications are as follows: CPU: Ryzen 2700x (originally listed as 2600x); RAM: ROG Strix X470-I gaming; 2x8GB GSKILL TridentZ DDR4 at 2400MHz (previously 3200MHz); GPU: ROG Strix 1080Ti connected via riser cable; Power Supply: Corsair SF600; Storage: WD 1TB HDD and Sandisk SSD Plus 480GB; CPU cooler: DeepCooL Gamer Storm CAPTAIN 120EX; Case: Phanteks Shift Air (1st Gen). The SSD was cleared from the BIOS, leaving no operating system installed—only Windows 10 was running. Initially, the system would crash when launching games, but the issue escalated to crashes even while just opening Windows, resulting in a SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION error. When I first arrived, I updated the BIOS, but it crashed again. I then used ASUS Crash Free BIOS 3 to restore functionality, which resolved the crashing but left the video output disabled. Temperatures were normal before and during crashes. All components—CPU, RAM, storage, and GPU—were detected in the BIOS. After restarting after a BIOS crash, the PC started but no longer displayed video. Assistance in diagnosing the problem would be greatly appreciated. Verify the CMOS battery level. Inspect CPU pins for damage. Test with one RAM module at a time. Use another PC for GPU testing and swap GPUs between systems. Boot without extra components like the riser cable or storage drives.

Replace the battery—it's very affordable. Also, make sure to inspect the thermal paste on the CPU during this process.

Hello, thank you very much for your prompt replies. After reviewing the CMOS battery voltage (2.9V), checking the CPU pins for any bends (none found), and confirming the thermal paste application was correct, I restarted with just one RAM stick and the system booted fine. In my first post I mentioned the specs, but it seems I didn’t clearly identify the CPU and RAM. The RAM is currently running at 2133 MHz—should I adjust it to 2400MHz in the memory settings? Also, I’m wondering if it’s likely that the RAM stick caused all these problems. Once again, your assistance was extremely helpful. Thank you so much!

Replace the battery, a fresh one is 3.3V and that's still acceptable. Most DDR4 RAM operates at 2133 or 2400 MHz when XMP (DOCP) isn't enabled. 2133 and 2400 meet JEDEC standards for DDR4. Zen+ likely won't run stably with XMP 3200, but it should work with the lower profiles (3000 or 2933) or if 3200 is loaded but manually adjusted to 2933, 3000, or 2666. Running DDR4 on JEDEC in a Ryzen is causing performance loss. Consider testing one stick at a time. You might use Memetst86+ or Passmark Memtest86 to check the RAM.
