Choose a suitable motherboard for your gaming setup. The MSI B660 Pro is recommended, but it's now more expensive than the CPU alone. An ASUS H610M-A offers a cheaper alternative. Consider how each board affects performance without planning future CPU upgrades. Your system will run with a 3060 Ti, 2x8 DDR4, and a standard M.2 SSD.

The biggest concern when choosing low-end boards for the LGA 1700 socket is power throttling. Boards with weak VRMs, such as the H610M-A, can cause performance drops, particularly when using an i7 or higher. The 12600K models should perform comparably, though slightly higher; results will remain solid regardless. For the 12400F, the VRM difference isn’t extreme, and a decent heatsink should keep things stable. If you’re on a budget, adding a fan aimed at the VRM can help maintain performance.

There’s no variation in your FPS. You invest in brand, quality, and features. The cheapest MOBO restricts usability and prevents overclocking, but if you’re not using it, skip it. Confirm it meets your current needs and any future requirements.

Modern 12th generation Intel CPUs require significant power, and many H610 and older B660 systems feature inefficient VRM designs with inadequate cooling. A 12th gen i5 is best suited for a reasonably capable motherboard.

I always prioritize quality components. I avoid spending only on the most costly parts but still choose reliable ones. My budget is around 200 to 250 dollars for a motherboard and another 200 to 250 for a power supply.

Typically performance gains range from 0 to 5%. This highlights how crucial motherboard specs can be. High-end CPUs require solid VRMs and cooling solutions, while lower-end components are less sensitive. Opt for aggressive default settings like all-core turbo. Internal timing improvements usually don’t impact you much. For specialized builds—such as with a 12100 CPU—BIOS tweaks can help, but the focus should shift to CPU and GPU performance. RAM matters less on motherboards compared to CPUs or GPUs. This effect is more noticeable in Intel systems than AMD ones, where most configurations work well unless you push many cores. At very basic levels, thermal throttling can occur, and some Intel chipsets restrict dual-channel RAM support.

You're asking about compatibility and performance issues. Specifically, whether a 12.1-inch display on an H610 can be limited or if it's related to lower-end models.

Consider the motherboard similar to the chassis of a vehicle. A solid construction is important, yet performance relies on the various parts attached to it.

Considering an i5 12600k on the most affordable B660 board available, it seems the chips struggle to maintain consistent performance. In AMD's market, a $80 solution works, but Intel's offerings are more expensive—around $120 or higher, and likely closer to $150 for reliable power and cooling. Throttling is less of a concern with the cheaper Intel options, though.
