I use a personal Windows 10 account. I don’t have a Microsoft account, but I need one to play Microsoft Studios games. I’m worried that using a Microsoft account might link my Windows to it. Does anyone on a local account agree that signing into a Microsoft account for a game won’t automatically connect your OS to that account?

Sure, that's clear. Just remember to pick the smaller "for MS apps only" choice when logging in, rather than the larger "OK" button that changes your local settings.

Thank you for your feedback. I've verified that the local account is not linked to the Microsoft account.

It helps to clarify more details about your situation. Using a Microsoft account for a Microsoft Studios game links it separately from your Windows system, but playing with friends requires connecting through the Xbox Gamebar app, which does tie back to Windows in certain ways. After logging into the Gamebar app, even if you choose "Microsoft apps only," the account remains under Settings > Accounts > Email & accounts. This doesn’t change your local account but ensures apps use it automatically. For instance, data synced with Edge works this way. When accessing the Microsoft Store, the system prefers using your account. Your Windows device and name are linked to your Microsoft account, though you can disable this by adjusting the settings and selecting a different permission option.
