Seeking an alternative to iTunes with a more subdued aesthetic, similar to Spotify but focused on local playback. Should support various audio formats like MP3, FLAC, WAV, etc., without using VLC. Looking for free options with a budget around $30.

MP4 is a great format for videos. I suggest using Foobar2000 or Winamp Lite with the Essentials pack. It supports two players, which is perfect for listening to music together. See my personalized Foobar2000 setup.

It seems you're curious about issues with VLC. Could you clarify what specifically is bothering you? Are you experiencing a problem, performance issue, or something else?

A vote for Foobar2000 here, awesome damn player which you can customise the theme of. If you like tinkering you can even make a custom version easily, many of those available online.

MusicBee is the tool I rely on. It functions as a contemporary alternative to Winamp.

I attempted but it adds other programs like Bonjour and the Apple auto update alert, and after the late 2012 iTunes updates didn’t meet my expectations. I only use it for videos, but the interface feels off when handling audio. Back in 2011 there was a mod that worked, but it was turned off in the 2012 updates. I prefer these for files, not streaming.
