I'm searching for a free package that can run in the background without being visible on the bottom bar of the main screen.

Could it be a Windows kiosk? Or another comparable application? Not certain about the functionality of hiding and restoring the "bar". Search for kiosk software applications.

I anticipate a mix of keyboard keys could stop the slideshow running.
No additional locking required.

The slideshow fills the screen completely so the task bar disappears.
You're wondering if this isn't sufficient and asking for clarification on why it might not be enough.

There are two screens, and I want the slideshow to run automatically on one without appearing on the first. For instance, when presenting in PowerPoint, it should show up at the bottom of the other screen and avoid accidental closure. Perfectly having it only in the notification area would be ideal.

I understand your concern now. Even if something is hidden on the taskbar, you'll still probably face the same problem of it closing or minimizing unexpectedly while using the PC for other tasks.
I recommend setting up a VM in kiosk mode for the slideshow. Kiosk mode is ideal for this purpose—it will automatically start your slideshow and prevent anything else from interfering. You can run it from a VM on your small screen, allowing you to use the PC on another screen for whatever else you need. The VM should require very few resources, possibly just 2 cores and 4 GB of RAM for Windows 10 to run smoothly.
