I possess an RTX 2060 and an i7 4790k. I haven't adjusted any settings. Occasionally, when playing games like CSGO or Valorant, my CPU usage spikes to 100 for a brief moment before returning. It's infrequent but bothersome. This leads to noticeable FPS drops. My overall performance stays at around 150 FPS in both titles, with fast sync active and a monitor refresh rate of 75Hz. Three background apps are running: MSI Afterburner, VLC media player, and Discord. Removing each one didn't resolve the problem. Temperatures remain stable, never exceeding 85°C on either CPU or GPU. This issue doesn't appear when I use demanding tasks like Destiny 2 or just browse. It isn't a GPU limitation since it happened with my older GTX 645 and also on my current i7. Both games are installed on an SSD, and the problem occurred with my previous Intel SSD as well. My hardware specs include a Dell OptiX 9020 motherboard, RTX 2060, 16GB DDR3 RAM, 500GB SSD, and a 600W EVGA PSU.
The RAM is set up for dual-channel configuration. The motherboard appears to be behaving oddly, which could contribute to the CPU spikes. When did these spikes begin occurring?
the ram is in dual channel 4x4gb, i don’t recall when the spikes began. They started after upgrading from an i7 4790 with a gtx 645 to a 4790k with a 2060. It keeps happening now.
I think your computer is limited by its RAM. With DDR3 and a 4th generation CPU, that might be the issue. Have you adjusted the CPU and RAM speeds to improve performance?
What's causing the slowdown on your PC? It seems your system is struggling with the DDR3 1600MHz RAM setup. Other Dell OptiPlex models with similar specs didn’t face this problem.
