There seems to be a misunderstanding. I checked all my computers and confirmed they run significantly faster than your mother's old notebook. For those who upgraded properly, there were no issues at all—10 out of 10 would recommend it. I’m also currently modding Windows without any problems.
It seems unclear what issue you're facing, but I'm trying my best. Please consider a fresh installation if you haven't done so already. It should make a difference.
I have a 7200rpm HDD, and the startup is really quick, even on both my laptops—one uses a Celeron and the other a 5400rpm drive. Yes, Windows 10 definitely helps speed things up.
The only part that slows me down with Windows 10 is how long it takes for my download to finish. If your computer is really old, why bother with a newer system?
I compared Windows 10 and 7 on my desktop and netbook. Windows 10 uses more CPU cycles when idle, making it a bit slower overall. However, once the search service is off, performance drops by less than 4%. Booting is quicker on the netbook with Windows 10, while it feels slower on my desktop (though I didn’t measure the desktop time).
What's the issue with Linus? New operating systems often encourage people to get new hardware. Since you haven't updated since Windows Vista, upgrading to Windows 10 makes sense. Did you install all the necessary drivers? It looks like you might be missing some.
