You can utilize your Windows 8.1 license if you still possess one.

Windows may request a fresh key not used in the past 30 days. Each device gets just one key.

I was never prompted to provide a key until I started booting Windows.

If you attempt to set up Windows on another machine, you'll require a unique key. Installing it on your existing device should work without issues—no need for a replacement key. I assumed you intended to use the USB drive for cross-device installation.

It seems uncertain if the setup works with a bootable USB drive. You might need a different activation key. Windows can be tricky when it comes to activation, especially with old PCs. To clarify: using a USB to install Windows on an existing machine usually works without a new key—just use your already-activated key. If you're installing on another computer, you'll likely need a fresh key since Windows only allows 30 days of use. Booting from the USB may require a new key because Windows treats it as a new device. For certainty, testing it yourself or contacting Microsoft would help.
