A 12900 instead of a 12400 ?
A 12900 instead of a 12400 ?
It looks like you're evaluating a used system with a 12900 processor. Your constraints are clear: the chip can manage full heat for a 12400 but struggles with 12900. Consider these points:
- Should it be used at full capacity unless benchmarks suggest otherwise?
- Can you limit cores, for instance to 6, to reduce heat output?
- Would it make sense to upgrade by lowering the maximum power usage to match the 12400 spec?

Yes and no. It won’t destroy the chip right away, but it does shorten its life. The price of a used 12900 is 167USD, which isn’t very reasonable. A new 14600K/KF costs around 190 and offers a superior upgrade, with better single-core performance and similar multi-core results.
Here a price of 14600K equals 220 USD (I prefer not to use Fs). Are you asking about the generation cost versus K value? Most of the Pcore variation seems to be covered by these differences. Interesting observation... Edited August 10, 2025 by leclod
Examining the CB scores in relation to a 12900 K was somewhat unexpected for me
However, the 12900 isn't a poor offer when you think about it...(note: didn't catch the K, but it doesn't change much) Edited August 10, 2025 by leclod
