9800X3D Overheating?
I recently upgraded from 5600x to 9800x3D and temperatures have been quite high. I've read and searched about multicore temps at 95°C being normal, but I'm still unsure if that's accurate. My Arctic Freezer 34 Esport Duo should handle it, though I think the main issue might be the old thermal paste from my 5-6 year old laptop. Mobo: Asus Tuf B650M-PLUS RAM: Kingston FURY 32GB KIT DDR5 6000MHz GPU: XFX SWFT 7800 XT PSU: Corsair TX750M During idle it's 50-52°C, games 68-75°C (though it can spike to 95°C when loading shaders) and multicore performance is 95-98°C, which seems quite high. Would you like me to include a screenshot? It doesn't matter whether I run Cinebench, OCCT, Cpu-Z or any other stress test—it consistently reaches 95 within about ten seconds.
It seems the temperature should stay below 95°C during idle and above 95°C only briefly. Gaming works at around 80°C, and anything over 95°C is quite extreme. If it doesn’t consistently exceed that point, it might be acceptable. The Freezer 34 isn’t the top air cooler option, but it should still perform adequately. What case are you planning to use? You might consider a slight undervolt with a curve optimizer to help maintain temperatures under 95°C more often.
The problem persists, especially in cinebench, where I had to stop it because it seemed to reach 100. Other multi-core stress tests showed similar results around 95-96, not just briefly. Also verify the BIOS settings to ensure maximum temperature is configured correctly; confirm it isn't set to 95°C. Check if the BIOS is up to date and if chipset drivers are current. Additionally, with your ASUS motherboard, review any Turbo Boost or similar controls in BIOS and disable them, including chipset settings, to see if it improves performance.
Opt for a cooler featuring some facial hair instead of peach fuzz on the exterior. These are usually left at the default setting, which isn't ideal.
It's not an issue. It's just how the CPU functions. Many people don't take the time to learn about it. They're testing the Ryzen 7000, but the 9000 performs similarly. Your idle temps are ideal for these CPUs, ranging from 50-55°C, which is typical for AM5 models with appropriate cooling. Gaming temps sit between 60-90°C, and they peak at around 95°C (sometimes up to 97°C in certain programs). Please watch the videos.
