Intel generally handles most RAM types well, but these 2GB sticks might not fit. It’s surprising someone would sell them for just $1.50.
The RAM must match the specifications, it’s DDR2 PC2-6400, and the board confirms support for both DDR2 PC2-6400 and PC2-5300. The extra 512 MB isn’t necessary since you already have 4 GB.
Ok, from what I could find, this patch is supposed to improve system stability on machines with more than 512 GB RAM. This makes it sound as if Win 98 should run with more, even without the patch, just that it might crash a lot. The other thing is more of a hardware limitation. On a 32 bit system you only have 2^32 addresses and some of them are going to be mapped to other hardware. So you may only ever be able to see e.g. 3.5 GB of RAM as usable.
I had a GT 7800 in the system—could that be the issue? It has 256 VRAM, though I don’t need unofficial drivers yet. I discovered what seems to be a workaround if you modify the configuration for another operating system or something similar, but I’m not sure I can make it work.
