Hey there, so I've been really into streaming these days. Got my mic, overlay setup, and all that. Right now I'm using the 9700k, which was more than sufficient for just playing games. But since I'm streaming six days a week, I'm noticing some performance hiccups in certain titles. It's not a big deal—no frame drops or stuttering—but there are moments where my CPU usage spikes to 55-60%. It doesn't linger long, but it still bothers me. I've got the budget, so I'm thinking about upgrading to a 9900k. I saw a streamer run Wolcen on a 9700k with 90% CPU and then switch to a 9900k where it drops to 25%. Any idea? Should I go with a fresh install or stick with the 9900k and see if a chipset update helps?

What graphics card are you running? You might be able to get the 9900K for a reasonable price, and it should function adequately even without a fresh installation.

I’m sticking with the GTX 1080 atm. Skipping the 2000 series and the 3000 setup feels better. The 9900k is available for $380 if I head to the Microcenter, otherwise it’s $450. I’m not keen on the hassle of replacing the board, especially since I’m not really into jumping into the 10 series right now. The 3900x and a new board caught my attention, but I can afford the extra threads for $380. Next year in June I’ll look into CPU/motherboard upgrades, but right now I need something that boosts my streaming performance. The extra threads will help with that. As for the 9700k, it’s still working fine—just a bit of 50-60% CPU usage here and there is annoying. With upcoming games like Cyberpunk, I don’t want it to become the standard.

Clean installations are rarely needed for a new CPU because it doesn't rely on any unique drivers or software. With a GTX graphics card, you can stream without NVENC and won't notice any loss in performance. Also, always quote people so we can clearly see your answers.

I didn't notice anything unusual. Everything runs smoothly with NVENC atm. I'm just observing around 50-60% usage during a few games, which made me think about upgrading. Still, it seems like I could easily install the chip and finish the job.

It seems your system is using a lot of CPU power during games, even on a 9900K. That’s unusual and might indicate an issue.

This means anything under 100% looks fairly acceptable overall, a smaller number won't make much difference

I might be being overly critical, but after Wolcen consumed over 90% of the chip, it caused me some concern.

You assume the typical 50-60% usage is insufficient. The concern likely stems from what you perceive as a poor figure rather than the actual norm.

Certainly, the impact will likely be minimal. My focus is on the future. I’m avoiding jumping into Cyberpunk and worrying about high CPU usage—especially with 8 threads during streaming. I don’t want to risk performance drops. Battlefield 1 seems to struggle on the 9700k during streaming, so I’d rather not face that scenario.
