It might be more useful if you consider a 9950X instead. I’m not sure why you didn’t mention it earlier, but it really matters for your CPU decision.

If your initial options are strictly between 9600X and 7900, then selecting the 7900 would be correct. The 9600X can't make up for the missing 6 cores, and many of those tasks are effectively multithreaded—where they aren't, the performance drop isn't substantial enough to justify giving up the 6 cores.

I found it hard to agree on pricing. 9700X seems better than 7900, especially with the stock cooler. Using the cooler might save a bit, but I’m open to paying more for 9700X if it’s worth it.

I’d assemble a DDR4 system using a 5900XT, taking full advantage of its 16GB/32GB performance. DDR4 offers affordable options, letting you fit 64 or 128GB easily.

They match much more closely than the 9600X, yet the 7900 still offers greater raw strength thanks to its four extra cores, which often gives it an edge in heavier tasks beyond light multithreading. It's worth thinking about your typical workload—how frequently you're using multiple threads versus light usage. Keep in mind that the 9700X has certain upgrades (like AVX-512) that can boost Zen 5 performance in specific scenarios. I think AV1 likely leverages AVX-512 as well.
