Optimizing performance would involve redistributing tasks across GPUs. Assign more threads to the stronger GPU for better utilization.

Intended to mean 9900k paired with 3080ti. Honestly, among all the CPUs I've had, the 8700k stands out as a standout. It never slowed down, handled overclocking well, and is still running strong in one of my top gaming setups. It'll be tough to part with it when I finally retire it to another spare unit.

i believed even medium quadcores suffice for gaming in 1080p at 60fps, but you might be referring to 4k

They function because of the eight threads. Just six cores can only provide six threads, which isn't sufficient.

It seems 2 additional cores would perform better than adding 4 more threads.

Not the usual way software operates. Sure, the two cores perform better under ideal conditions with full load. But this isn’t the real picture. If a game needs to run eight processes at once, an i5 9600k running at 8GHz will still lag because it must pause while one core finishes a task before moving on. That’s why a couple of years ago, a 2600K provided more consistent performance across all games compared to a 9600K at 5GHz. The latter definitely offered higher average FPS, but its lows rarely dropped below single digits—just a few percent. On the other hand, the 2600K maintained around 60-70fps in most titles and never fell below 24fps even in its lowest frames. When you look at frame rates, it’s clear the 2600K was significantly more stable. This wasn’t just about the GPU; the game settings were often reduced, giving the GPU plenty of room. In short, the Xbox One and PS4 each have eight cores, with seven typically available for games. To keep things running smoothly, developers request at least seven cores or threads to avoid rewriting the scheduler entirely.
