Do those CPUs really perform similarly when clocked alike? You notice many benchmarks showing the 10600K leads in gaming, but is that due to the stock 8700K being technically around 4.3GHz if you turn off multi-core boost? With your CPU at 5GHz, it’s fair to compare it to a 10600K at 5GHz.
the 8700k gets significantly reduced after the meltdown/spectre updates, and it seems a 5ghz ring oc on a 10600k chip isn't quite the same as a 9700k or 9900k. I've also noticed some extremely high ram speeds on the z490, which is actually faster. It's really impressive how much processing power was packed into their 14nm design.
Your 8700k running at 5Ghz might be more similar to a stock 10600 model. At that frequency, both retain their IPC edge, which is why they excel at stock clock speeds. Also, your CPU at 5Ghz uses roughly double the power compared to the 10600k while delivering comparable performance.
It’s fine, I just reviewed the hardware unboxed 8700k revisit. At 5 GHz it outperforms the latest Intel chips on the market—definitely worth checking out.
8700k lacks the same built-in security updates as the 10600k, but with an overclock it becomes barely noticeable. Even in recent titles, on a 3080 chip I seldom feel CPU throttling at 5ghz and 1440p. The latest AMD processors are quicker, and newer Intel chips handle heat better with added security improvements, yet the distinctions aren’t significant for high-res gaming. Any variation between the 10600k and an overclocked 8700k is probably just a chart difference, not a real one. Personally I haven’t noticed any stuttering or similar issues, nor has my partner on a locked 8700 (which acts like a regular 8700k). Obviously, I wouldn’t suggest buying one right now, but if you still own one, wait for the next generation to release an upgrade. I’ve been using this model for over three years, and it still stays close to its peak gaming performance, matching top CPUs even at lower resolutions on the most powerful GPUs. Very well said, and I could not agree more. I do not plan on replacing mine until May 2022, when my stepson graduates college and I give the entire machine to him. I fully expect he'll use the machine for another 5 years without issue for his financial modeling needs. Gaming will be fine as well, tho I would imagine a GPU upgrade at some point. Possibly putting a 9900K on it if he chooses, but no real need.
I once saw a 5800x in my Amazon cart briefly, but stopped before the 3080 came. After that, I've been gaming titles like Assassin's Creed, RDR2, and CP2077, consistently hitting over 95% GPU usage. I believe a CPU upgrade wouldn't make much difference.
