8700k upgrade advice
Hello everyone, we currently have an 8700k 5ghz ASUS Maximus Z370 with 16GB RAM and a 3200mhz CL16 cooler. I’m planning to move into video editing and think 7900X looks promising. However, the current setup is tight—budget is around $750 PC, mostly for gaming streaming. A new case, cooler, and RAM upgrade would be necessary since the existing board likely has only 240AIOs and won’t handle a 360AIO efficiently. The 4000D power supply and 850W PSU are fine, but the airflow is limited. I’m considering a $1700 build with DDR5 and AM5, which would give us room for future upgrades. If we add another 500GB RAM later, it could be worth it. In a few months, prices might drop to around $12.6k or $13.6k, making a swap more feasible. Right now I’m weighing the extra performance gain against the cost and space constraints. What do you think? Any suggestions for balancing performance and budget?
The release is expected in five days on the 13th generation, so it's wise to wait for some reviews before deciding. No need to upgrade the motherboard for this release. New RAM isn't required yet, though a 32GB option is available at a lower price. The 5900X remains a solid pick, but a 12700 offers similar performance at a lower cost. If you opt for the non-F version, you can also leverage its integrated GPU for video editing speed.
It wasn't just five days; he kept waiting to see what would happen next. Would you let me know if you're okay with missing him?
I don't suggest the Ryzen 7000 right now. Motherboards are costly, RAM is pricey, CPUs aren't inexpensive, and it doesn't justify the investment even with strong performance. The 7600X paired with the cheapest AM5 board and a budget 16GB kit costs more than a comparable 5800X3D setup with a solid B450 board and fast 16GB RAM. With the MSRP for the 13th generation nearly matching the 12th, you can still use 600 series boards and DDR4 memory, making it more logical if you want real gains in speed.
to retain your RAM you can use 5800x3d too, zen 4 isn't great beyond 7950x, and I'd hold off for a 3d version or the 13th gen.
You'd also need a fresh graphics card. A simple CPU upgrade wouldn't make much difference.
