8700k Single Core Performance
8700k Single Core Performance
While using The Borderlands Remaster I observed my frame rate changing significantly, dropping to around 100-180 frames in expansive areas and spiking to 200-300fps in tight spaces. On a 144hz display the lower end was unsatisfactory. Checking the task manager revealed my CPU (i7-8700k/4.99GHZ) and GPU (1080Ti) were around 25% and 30% in large zones, and about 30% and 50% in smaller areas. Switching to the performance page showed one CPU core reaching maximum capacity, while another would increase when it dropped below 100%. This pattern also appeared in Fallout 4, Terraria (peaking at 46 fps), and Outward. Windows 10 with updated drivers.
In any case, certain games run mainly on a single thread and rely on just one core. However, using Dual Channel memory and faster RAM can occasionally boost your FPS significantly in some titles.
I own two 8gb sticks of DDR4 RAM, but I'm not sure about their speeds. Others have reported significant improvements with nearly identical configurations.
Did you verify using CPU-Z? A 4400Mhz clock speed seems elevated for 5GHz. Please confirm so I can alert you accordingly.
I checked using CPU-Z but ended up with incorrect data, specifically DRAM Frequency at 1200MHz.
I just tried running Terraria on my laptop and got steady 60fps, which is unusual since I think the game is limited by in-game physics. On my desktop with those specs, I’m seeing up to 46 fps depending on video settings, and my task manager shows one CPU core at full capacity, suggesting it might be the issue rather than the game itself.
