I've been experiencing temperatures around 80-85°C while gaming with my 8700k. It seems it's time to consider replacing this CPU. I've seen the delidding process before and think it will be straightforward. Before starting, what precautions should I take? What are the key points during liquid metal application? Does standard thermal paste still perform well? How do I reinstall the IHS? And which material should I use for a new lid?
Start by noting your temps are in a decent range. CPUs usually don’t slow down until they hit around 100°C. Next, tell me what you’re using for cooling. Third, have you refreshed the paste or cleared out dust from the heatsink/HSF? Finally, describe your case and airflow—delidding can help slightly but won’t likely save much unless your CPU is really struggling.
Real precautions beyond caution are minimal. Standard thermal paste is fine. I use Antec Formula 7, but MX4 could work better without the diamond grit. Permatex Ultra Black is available at any auto shop. Place the IHS plate with a dot at each corner and secure it in the socket. Allow 24 hours for curing before turning on the PC, though I usually skip that step.
I have refreshed the paste on my Cooler Master Hyper 212X. The enclosure uses a Corsair 270r with two fans—one at the front and one at the back.
I'd rather skip this and focus on enhancing case cooling or consider getting a better cooler.
Skip the delidding and opt for a better HSF first. You'll experience significantly more temperature reduction compared to using a Noctua cooler. Add an extra intake fan at the front since your case lacks strong airflow there, which will boost performance. If you've already lowered the temperature by 15°C, it shows your CPU was extremely poor quality—most users don't reach that level.
I've tried countless chips, which means my chances are low. For me, it's definitely worth it.
