8700K delid - high temperatures - require guidance
8700K delid - high temperatures - require guidance
Morning everyone,
I’m not new to computers with more than 16 years of experience, but when it comes to overclocking I’m completely a beginner and would really appreciate some guidance.
As mentioned in the title, I’ve overclocked my 8700k using liquid metal after following many guides and videos, and I’m currently experiencing BSODs with temperatures around 78-90°C. It seems there’s something fundamentally wrong here.
Details about my setup:
- 8700k 5GHz delid LM
- Gigabyte Gamer 5 Motherboard
- Dark Rock Pro 4
- DDR4 3200MHz XMP
My motherboard settings:
1.28V - 70-78°C (unstable in Prime95 with small FFT)
1.29V - 75-85°C (unstable in Prime95)
Stable at 1.33V with all cores at 100% but temperatures reach 95°C, which is clearly incorrect.
I’ve looked through various online resources, but nothing seems to help. I’m particularly curious about the AVX offset mentioned in the Prime95 video you shared:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mcZkEZ8x3oA
Idle temperatures are around 30-38°C even with cooler reseats multiple times.
I’m really struggling and it’s keeping me up at night, even during work hours. I’ve tried researching extensively but haven’t found a solution. Please let me know if there’s anything else I should consider to get this resolved.
Thanks in advance,
James

It might be the IHS issue. They are often not perfectly flat and can create such a scenario. You could try removing the CPU and spinning the IHS on a flat surface to verify if it is flat. If not, sanding it down would be a longer process.
That is a very good point, I will give this a go tonight ... if its not flat - I work in manufacturing, possibly get the guys to cnc it flat ? or would sanding be just enough.
You got any other ideas what it could be ? It feels like i have done something wrong now but i honestly took my time and followed guides/videos precisely. i forgot to mention i have xmp profile is at 3200mhz.
Kind regards
James
XMP screws are suitable only for platforms above 3200. Just sand it, or if CNC is precise (as it should be), apply just enough 0.5-1mm to reveal the copper of the IHS. I believe Jayztwocents and Gamernexus created those guides; you can find more ideas on YouTube. (I think this is the video?)
Thank you for your reply, Robert.
It seems like you're wondering if there might be something else in the BIOS settings that isn't being configured properly, especially since you mentioned a possible issue with Prime95 and small FFT. Based on the YouTube link you shared, it appears you're concerned about a BSOD related to FFT. Let me know if you'd like further clarification.
Regards James
Uncertain about the 1.33V setup with H100i; i7-8700k runs at 70-80*C (see JayZTwoCents video).
What settings should you use?

I'm not very experienced with overclocking, I've only learned the FSB OC on a 775 socket. Thanks if you can help.

Intel Temperature Guide - CT Hi Compu, I am using version 29.4 - I've read about this AVX setting which some people have disabled in Prime95 to avoid BSOD, but once they enable it during stress tests they started getting BSOD. I'm not sure if it's a real test if I turn it off and then check for BSOD. Attached are my settings via Windows Aorus Easytune (I originally changed them using the BIOS).
