I recently upgraded my system and now my new motherboard supports both 4-pin and 8-pin EPS connectors, while my old board only had a 4-pin one. My PSU has a single 4+4 EPS port, but I’m unsure whether I need both the 8-pin and 4-pin connectors connected or just one of each. My PSU is a Thermaltake Smart 600W and my motherboard is a Gigabyte Z390 M gaming model.

Most users won’t require the additional 4-pin EPS and are content with the standard 8-pin version. The 8-pin already supports 235W, surpassing any CPU I’ve considered for the 1151 platform. According to what I’ve learned, the extra pin is mainly for those who connect numerous GPUs into the setup.

The additional four-pin connector is likely for heavy overclocking. Otherwise, you can safely use just the eight-pin connection.

8 pin EPS works well for most LGA 1151 devices, while the additional 4 or 8 pins are preferred by advanced overclockers. Note: some might say these extra pins could benefit a 9900K.

It’s a 384W model with the lowest EPS 8-pin configuration just to confirm the extra connector is unnecessary. Unless your VRM delivers 300A, that’s not a problem.
