7950x DDR5 single or dual channel...
Ordered a modest Christmas present for my son—7950X TUF board, two 16GB RAM sticks... I thought it would work fine. I have a 8700k going to him. The setup includes a 64GB or 16GB kit, which is what I know about. Since DDR5 16GB modules don’t support dual rank, they’re limited to 8 or 32GB. A 64GB or 16GB configuration should be fine. I’ve got a CL36 6000MHz transceiver and a dual-rank 16GB kit with EXPO support. Should this affect my performance when running modules at that speed?
DDR5 offers minimal gains from dual rank settings. It provides a slight performance boost, but usually it can be resolved by adjusting timing manually or using faster single-rank RAM. Unless you require 64GB of memory, dual rank isn't necessary.
Sure, 16 threads and 64 gigabytes work well together. However, modules are currently very costly. Honestly, my server is the biggest memory consumer—it has 256 gigabytes of affordable DDR4 2666 memory, which is enough just for storage, not speed. I thought lower clock speeds would help a bit.
The variation will stay around 1% for dual rank versus single rank when subtimings are adjusted. If subtimings aren't manually configured, it's closer to 3%, though it's still not very obvious. If you don't intend to use the additional memory, it might be better to save your resources.
It's true the 7950X might be too much for a main system, but I just wanted to give it a shot.
