I have a 4090 and a 7900X. After hearing about x3D, I’m excited about the extra frames the 3D VCache can provide. I don’t need it right away—just enjoy thinking about how much more performance a better CPU could bring. I’m curious which AMD chip is coming soon versus one that’s already out.
Even though the 9000 series will likely outperform in gaming thanks to 3D-cache, I don’t think there’ll be huge changes since you already have a 7900X. There’s little value in swapping CPUs just for tiny gains in FPS. You might get more benefit from other areas, such as improved peripherals.
I wouldn't describe 5-10 frames per second as "plenty." I'd use a completely different term to express that concept.
The X3D's cache isn't effective in every game, particularly at high resolutions. Keeping all 12 cores wouldn't make sense if you're already using them; it would be unnecessary. I'd hold off until the next generation, but truthfully, skipping two cores shouldn't be noticeable.
I stream at 1440p and strive for top FPS in high refresh rates on a 170Hz display across all titles. I only purchased the Ryzen 9 7900X because of its speed, ignoring the 3D V-Cache. This setup is solely for gaming.
The 4090 struggles to reach 170Hz at 1440Hz with a 7900x setup. The PBO/CO doesn’t explain this issue.
You have three choices: stick with the 78x3d or switch to 98x3d. The least bad option is to change to 78x3d.
You already have a solid setup with your 7900X. Switching to the newer models won’t make a noticeable impact. Stick with what you have. Reviews suggest the 7800X3D offers roughly a 12% boost over the average 7900X at 1080p, and even less at 1440p. In older or competitive titles like CS:GO or Rainbow Six Siege, both CPUs typically exceed 400 fps, so you won’t see any difference. Occasionally the 7900X performs slightly better. Save your investment.
