7800x3d with Dark Rock 4 tracks and system shutdowns
Hey everyone, I recently assembled my PC about three weeks ago and have experienced five complete shutdowns while gaming. That happened twice during New World, once while downloading TLoU shaders, and twice in Microsoft Flight Simulator. Last night I disabled CPU Game Boost, updated the chipset drivers via AMD Adrenaline, and made minor adjustments to the fans—like setting the CPU fan to PWM instead of auto. I’m confident these steps helped, but I remain a bit anxious about my temperatures. Do these changes really matter, or should I be ignoring them? From startup, my average CPU temperature is 57.5°C, while the die reads around 51.3°C. A note: I usually check Tctl/Tdie, but now I’m wondering if I should stick to that or focus only on the die reading. During intense games like TLoU, I’m seeing temps between 70 and low to mid-80s, reaching up to 87 or 88. I think the shutdowns likely occurred near the 7800x3d’s peak temperature of about 89°C. Since I’ve only applied a small amount of thermal paste and haven’t stress-tested the system much before, I’m not sure if it’s safe. Other heavy games such as Warzone run in the 65-85 range. This is with Dark Rock 4 (not Pro). Appreciate any advice you can offer. Here’s my part list: https://pcpartpicker.com/user/tylerkillzya/saved/ZNG2kL
It's hard to say, but AMD CPUs can reach high boosts similar to thermal limits and power consumption. Right now I'm around 80 with good cooling under heavy use. It's at 59 when I write this, and I'm looking for a better cooler. I chose one that fits my mini-ITX case, only to discover I could fit a much larger one. With a 5800x non-3d, it should outperform the chip itself. Have you seen the Nocuia video from Computex?
