7800x3D versus 7950x3D – which resolution fits better?
7800x3D versus 7950x3D – which resolution fits better?
Hey tech enthusiasts! It seems ZEN 5 might be overhyped, and the 16% IPC claim isn’t solid. The performance drop compared to older models is puzzling. I’ve been using a 7950x with co-processor settings and 6000cl30+buildzoid timings for two years. No hardware upgrade has helped much on my non-X3D CPU. The 9800X3D feels similar to the 7800X3D, and it would likely cost around 499€ in the EU. My 7950x was discounted quickly, and I chose it mainly because its single-core speed was top-notch. If you’re not rendering much anymore, maybe the upgrade isn’t worth it—though a 7950x3D could be a good option since it’s only slightly pricier than the 7800X3D. What do you think?
It really depends on your priorities. If you already have a 7950x, performance is sufficient. For gaming, 7800x3D is clearly better. Buying the 7950x3D would be pointless unless you enjoy the extra work—it adds unnecessary stress and hassle. If you're okay with some effort, it might make sense, but most people prefer a straightforward setup for regular use. Ideally, separate your needs: one board for gaming, another for general tasks.
I've come across a fascinating idea. It seems AMD designed the 9600X and 9700X similarly to the 7600 and 7700 non-X models, aiming for higher TDP and better gaming performance. This approach could allow gamers to bypass the need for 6 or 8 core components, preparing them for future generations with more cores.
Based on my knowledge, the main constraint for 3D VCache CPUs tends to be heat generation. Zen 5 generally uses less power than Zen 4, which might provide a benefit. Additionally, current Zen 5 chips enforce quite strict power boundaries, which explains their performance levels. Should AMD choose to turn off this feature by default for the X3D models, it’s uncertain what impact that would have.
Existing feedback mentions PBO at 165W showing little gain in FPS, meaning higher TDP components perform similarly while delivering a 20%-25% boost in multi-core performance with identical core counts. This suggests you'd receive roughly 7800X3D for the increased cost...
Especially as there is the rumour that 9800X3D will allow PBO, which would make sense given the low TDP so far of 9000 series with much more headroom. But there is also talk that this may be AGESA or Windows scheduling problems with the new architecture. So things could very much change over the coming months.
