7800X3D combined with Thermalright AXP-90 X53 Full Copper (Fractal Terra) delivers stable temperatures.
Hello! It's amazing how much you can fit into a Fractal Terra, right? And what a toasty oven! I recently finished my Terra build, but I'm already considering a new case with a little more space, preferably with space for a 240mm AIO. As many people, I'm nervous about CPU temperatures and the temperature spikes + fan speed spikes. 65-70°C Idle spikes. Why? The case is tightly packed, and well cable-managed to make as much room as possible for airflow. Bottom fan and CPU Cooler fan is set as exhaust, in lack of better options and knowledge. Component list: Case: Fractal Terra GPU: Nvidia 4090 Founders Edition CPU : AMD Ryzen 7800X3D PSU: Corsair SF1000 Platinum MOB: ASUS Rog STRIX B650E-I Ram: G.Skill Flare X5 6000 32GB CPU Cooler: Thermalright AXP-90 X53 (Swapped to Noctua fan) CaseFan: Noctua NF-A 12x15 Operating System: Win10 Pro 64 Ambient temperature: 21-22°C. I wish I could fit a Noctua NH-L12s CPU Coolers, but it's slightly too tall. Experience from booting and doing 1 Battlefield V game: With Noctua Paste Lowest temp idle: 44.4°C Package Temp. Max: 85.4°C Cores (Max): 79.1°C Power Max: 74.36W Utilization: 109.5%(??) With ThermalGrizzly KryoSheet Lowest temp idle: 39.9°C Package Temp. Max: 83.9°C Cores (Max): 77.9°C Power Max: 78.54W - More power drawn, but less utilization? Utilization: 95.5% NB. I have undervolted the CPU (-20). Even after re-"pasting" my worry is the temperature spikes, fan speed spikes and how quickly the temperature rises. I'm not used to these temperatures. I'm playing 1440p with 144-240Hz, and I'm not going bonkers with the graphics even though they are high. If there is someone with experience with low-profile air-cooled 7800X3D's and their temperatures, as well as making sense of the utilization / temperatures, I'd be very happy for some advice on how to lower the temperatures. Appreciate all feedback.
I’m really interested in understanding your choice of a compact build with a 4090 chipset. Are you concerned about thermal management? The 7800x3D can get warm, but it’s not overly power-hungry. The 4090 tends to draw a lot of heat and doesn’t dissipate well. Your CPU still reaches around 4.9–5GHz, which is fine. If temperatures start rising, you might need to throttle slightly, but it’s not happening yet. With air coolers built into the chip, they’re likely operating near their limits, so 85°C is normal. You could adjust the core voltage by -20 to -25, which is what you have. For most users, tweaking fan control manually isn’t necessary—it works well for me.
If you're not familiar with Ryzen, particularly the 5000 and 7000 series, these temperatures are normal, especially with the cooler you're using. The small SFF chassis you chose is typical. For accurate utilization data, consider using HWiNFO instead of HWMonitor, which often gives incorrect readings.
The feedback was helpful. The SFF build is mainly about appearance. The 4090FE wasn’t originally intended; it came from a chain of events. Small changes can lead to unexpected results. It seems like the rabbit hole pulled me in. Reading reassures me the temps are typical for this setup. It feels like a personal challenge since I’m not used to SFF or Ryzen CPUs. I’ll begin using HWiNFO, thanks! By the way, are you checking the package temperature or the CPU temperature specifically?
