Hey everyone,
I'm trying to figure out how to handle this hot situation.
Relevant system details:
- Gigabyte Gaming 7 Z270 board
- 7700k
- Kraken 62x cooler
- Stock temps at Prime 95 small were around just below 80°C at a 1.87V manual setting (not much experimented with voltage yet.)
- At 5GHz, it would get stale until 1.320V, then temps reached about 96°C!
- Now I'm stuck at 4.8GHz and 1.285V, but stability is uncertain.
- Temperatures are near 85°C.
These readings seem unusually high, especially with the fans maxed out.
Do you have any obvious BIOS settings I should check to reduce heat?
I'm also considering replacing the stock coolant and reapplying the Noctua pads I have, but the Kraken is brand new so I'm not sure what to do next?

Just a quick note. I ended up setting up the Asus Max Hero 9 for several reasons. While I really like the Gigabyte model, I’m feeling a bit worn out now, so I think I’ll stick with this one.
In short, I feel pretty satisfied with the setup.
Performance stats: running at 4.9Ghz @ 1.220v (offset mode)
-1 AVX Offset
Max temperatures around 82°C on average for Aida 64 and Prime 95. I haven’t tried 5GHz yet... maybe tomorrow.

Consider using the Intel Extreme Tuning Utility or hardware 64 options.

Supahos :
Avoid prime 95 version over 26.6
Ne0Wolf7 :
Consider using intel extream tuning utility or hardware 64
Current version is 26.6, I'll test other options and dedicate more time tomorrow for re-seating cooler, etc., to check the results. Thanks

It's possible you simply experienced an unfortunate situation with a CPU that generates excessive heat

Did you mention setting vcore manually to 1.87v? That’s a lot too high.
Sorry, it was supposed to be 1.28v. I was typing quickly to go get the woman—please forgive my messy writing!
Today I’m going to experiment with things and share the results. I just got an Asus Max Hero and am thinking about trying it this weekend, comparing it but I really like the gig board and feel lazy—we’ll see.

I'm on 26.6 and will experiment with others, plus spend more time tomorrow on re-seating coolers and similar tasks to see the results. Thanks
OCCT is another stress/stability program I prefer. I used OCCT-Small for checking maximum temperatures (30 minutes) and OCCT-Large for stability testing (3 hours). They suggest OCCT-LINPACK for max temps, but OCCT-Small gave me the heat readings. (Maybe just because my DRAM is OC'd)
Not recommending one is better than the other. Just wanted to highlight other possibilities. Aida64 is another option, but gaming showed higher temps than Aida64 did, so I switched to OCCT.

Just an update. I ended up installing the Asus Max Hero 9. for various reasons. Really like the look of the Gigabyte better but at this point I'm sort of over it so I think I'll keep this one installed.
Anyway, point of it is I think I'm sitting pretty good.
Running 4.9Ghz @ 1.220v (offset mode)
-1 AVX Offset
temps maxing out around 82C (avg) on Aida 64 and Prime 95. I haven't tried 5ghz yet...maybe tomorrow.
