Do you have a product key? If yes, visit Microsoft's site to obtain a fresh ISO. Otherwise, if the laptop is outdated, it might not be 64-bit, and Windows 8 won't help much.

I possess a startup key for my PC. Right now I’m only using the laptop since the hard drive is locked, so I can’t access it. I’ll download and reinstall it on another drive soon. Thanks for checking it out now.
