5930k Overclocking question
5930k Overclocking question
Hello everyone, I've just configured my new setup and am aiming for the highest possible overclock.
I'm using a Cooler Master Nepton 280L with a push&pull setting. My RAMs are four 8GB Kingston Predator 2400 modules.
My initial configuration was:
Multiplier: 48
BCLK Frequency: 100
Core Voltage: 1.404
System Agent Voltage: 1.02
DRAM Frequency: 2666
DRAM Voltage: 1.4
It lasted for half an hour during the AIDA64 stress test, with the hottest core reaching 96°C and the average package temperature at 92°C. However, after playing BF4, my PC crashed after about 40 minutes.
Later, I adjusted it to:
Multiplier: 47
BCLK Frequency: 101
Core Voltage: 1.398
System Agent Voltage: 1.02
DRAM Frequency: 2666
DRAM Voltage: 1.4
This version passed the stress test again, with only a 5-6°C drop in CPU temperature, but it crashed after a few hours while gaming.
Now I reduced everything further to:
Multiplier: 45
BCLK Frequency: 100
Core Voltage: 1.3
System Agent Voltage: 1.02
DRAM Frequency: 2666
DRAM Voltage: 1.3
It has been running smoothly for the past two days, but I'm eager to extract more performance.
Current readings are:
Package: Max, 79°C average, 69°C idle, 41°C during idle.
One core is significantly hotter than the others, reaching up to 84°C, while under load it averages around 76°C.
I’m worried about the thermal paste application or simply missing a chance. What else should I try to push this machine further? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

You might have had bad luck, I recommend trying to replace the thermal paste. My 5960x works at 1.2v and operates at 4.5 Ghz, which suggests something is amiss.
Alright, I'll give it a shot. Thanks for your response. Could you share your temperatures? Also, what are your thoughts on using 1.4v (±0.05)? Is it safe as long as it stays below 100 degrees?
And have you tried pea or X, or something else?
I did a pea size setup and my CPU idles around 35°C. Maybe I was lucky—I didn't hit the max temps, so you should be okay.
You might have been unlucky, I recommend trying to redo the thermal paste. My 5960x runs at 1.2v and is at 4.5 Ghz, so something seems amiss. Will do. Thanks for the reply. How are your temps? Do you think using 1.4v(-/+0.05) is safe as long as it stays below 100 degrees? And what did you use for cooling—pea, X, or another method?
