Hi, you're currently using a 5830K on the Rampage V Extreme board with DDR4 16GB RAM (4GB x 4). You're thinking about upgrading to DDR4 64GB (32GB x 2) since it's hard to find 16GB x 4 locally in Malaysia. Your main worry is whether your system will handle 32GB per two modules. I checked the QVL for your board, but it doesn't support 64GB per module. Have anyone else with this configuration been using it? Thanks for your help!
It seems BIOS updates for unbuffered 32GB modules were released in 2019 for the 8th and 9th generation CPUs. There appear to be no recent updates for these boards. Kingston's configurator suggests only dual rank 16GB modules, which means no newer single rank 16GB or dual rank 32GB options. Crucial's setup recommends 8GB modules (1Rx8). Unofficially, it's possible some of these boards support registered memory, though you might need a Xeon for that.
I own this board, I use four 32GB sticks, I've tried up to 64GB ones and they function properly. The issue isn't with the QVL because 32 and 64GB sticks weren't available when the board was supported. They did release a BIOS update to better support larger RAM modules. Also, your chip and board are quad-channel memory, so using fewer than four sticks will likely hurt performance.
You'll likely use the extra memory only if your computer isn't a server. Otherwise, it probably won’t add much value, and you should consider a proper upgrade for better performance.
It seems you're checking if the system is using registered memory. You mentioned testing with up to 64GB drives and noting that unbuffered ECC for that size isn't available.
yeah, I've checked the big brands configurators and as you mentioned they only recommend 8gb or 16gb per dimm max. googled around but only can find 7 8 years back discussion on the chip and board, hence this post great to know!, possible to share your config? ram brands, timings, speed etc as I've seen lots of discussion on the finicky-ness of the platform. currently using it for CAD and 3D works, will convert into a home server in the future when I decide to pull the trigger on a whole new setup
It used to run a XEON, but it’s now being upgraded to a dual 48-core EPYC system once delivered—so it’s already in pieces. You can purchase two dual-channel racks and connect them in quad channels, which often works. There aren’t any new QVLs available for the platform lately, meaning you’re mostly relying on testing and adjustments.
Confirming for you that those 32GB drives were clearly unbuffered and not registered. This matches your request and aligns with the same board, which is ideal.
