I currently own a 5700 non x in my setup since buying it in early 2023. I'm thinking about upgrading to a 5700x3d or maybe a 5800x3d if I find a decent deal. I'm curious whether I need to flash the BIOS. My rig is an ASUS Prime B550 Plus. The 5700 has been offered by some OEMs for a while, but they just launched the 5700x3d now, and opinions are mixed. Thanks!

Check the BIOS version and date in CPU-Z by opening the utility, selecting your motherboard, and navigating to the BIOS setup menu.

Open the BIOS settings and check the current version. Contrast this with the version listed on the product page they mark as supporting your desired chip. It’s quite straightforward.

It already backs up any Ryzen 5000 processor, so it should also work with the 5800X3D. I haven’t seen a board that has the 5000 but excludes the 5800X3D.

It's okay to just improve your BIOS even if you're not sure why.

For the 5700X3D, a BIOS update is likely necessary because the chip was recently released and your board probably lacks support. With the 5800X3D, it's more likely you won't need an update since it's been available longer. In both cases, updating the BIOS when upgrading the CPU is advisable. These updates often bring better memory compatibility, system stability, and security improvements that are beneficial.

For reference, check the Asus support page. Here are the BIOS requirements:
- Prime B550-Plus - 5700 requires minimum BIOS 2423 (2021/08/26)
- 5700X3D needs minimum BIOS 2803 (2022/04/29)
- 5800X3D also needs minimum BIOS 2423 (2021/08/26)
