Not always. Most games today work well on 6 cores/12 threads, though some already support more. Cyberpunk can handle 12 cores/24 threads easily. This pattern will likely keep growing in the coming years. It might take another year or two, but 6 cores are moving toward quad-core performance before that.

Six-core processors will remain relevant for several more years. Quad-core dominated from the budget C2Q era up until around the ninth generation, and six-core is likely to stay popular among users for another five years or so.
